VT B-Ball Recruiting Update

According to a recent post on TechHoops.com (sparked by a Roanoke Times article), the scholarship situation for next season has cleared up drastically. Terrance Vinson will not be playing basketball in the Fall, but will instead enroll in graduate school (not sure if that would be at VT or not) and pass up his redshirt senior year. With seniors AD Vassallo and Cheick Diakite graduating and the other unused scholarship from last season, that makes 4 scholarships for 4 recruits. Lamont "Momo" Jones has decommitted from Virginia Tech, and it doesn't look likely that he will recommit.

VT also missed out on Seth Curry who decided to transfer to Duke. He is likely to be a backup PG/SG at Duke, so I'm not sure why he chose to go there rather than a place where he can be in the starting lineup, but whatever. Curry has to sit out a year before he is allowed to play for Duke, and by that time Jon Scheyer will have graduated, meaning that Elliot Williams and Nolan Smith are the likely starters at guard, with Curry as the primary backup. He will have a chance to start by his junior year... whoop-de-do. How Seth Greenberg managed to whiff on Seth Curry after he obviously whiffed on Stephen Curry is a mystery to me. Greenberg watched Stephen Curry grow into his body and blossom as a player right in front of his eyes, so why wouldn't the same thing happen for Seth? Was Kendall Durant too good to pass up? I ask because Greenberg offered a scholarship to Durant, but not to Seth Curry. Or what about Gene Swindle for that matter? It just doesn't make sense to me.

We didnt whiff on Seth Curry. Can he shoot sure he can, but he is a liability on defense. With Erik Green coming in we are not in high demand for guards. MD20-20 is a great 2 and Erik Green will blow away people with his skills. Hank has to learn to shoot, but he is a serviceable point with decent ball handling skills. We need a big man with big ticket moves down low to bang it out with Ed Davis and the group from Carolina. I think Seth made a huge mistake by going to the most overrated program in the country, but it was his choice. Tech did try pretty hard to land the guy.

It's hard to recruit a good big man. Ed Davis was from right here in Richmond and we oouldn't land him. Seth Curry was definitely attainable, and what Seth Greenberg can teach him is how to defend. He can't teach a guy how to shoot better and make his own shot, but as a defensive-minded coach, he can certainly teach Curry how to defend.

Also, Greenberg wanted Curry to redshirt for a year, but Curry wanted to play right away. And with only two ballhandlers on the roster, I think Greenberg should have taken that deal. Erick Green might be good, but then again he might not... it's way too early to assume he's the answer at PG.

He can't play right away. He has to sit a year per NCAA rules. That is what greenburg wanted. You cant transfer to another school and start right away. Ed Davis wanted nothing to do with us from the start. We were the first to be in contact with him. He narrowed his choices to UVA (mom's choice) and UNC (dad's choice) he ended up at UNC. With other supposed misses whether its MoMO or Gus there are a lot of other factors. Greenberg runs a clean program, but he is one of the few. I'll leave it at that.

Marty, I love Greenberg, but the man's not a saint... he dropped the ball on Seth Curry. And I wasn't talking about redshirting Curry after the transfer, I was talking about when Greenberg "recruited" him out of high school. Seth wanted to play right away as a freshman instead of redshirting so that's why he picked Liberty over VT.
